WiSST – Wind Solar Sea Tower

WiSST - Wind Solar Sea Tower - is our pilot project that aims to develop a Darrieus-type Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) on an offshore floating platform provided with photovoltaic modules.

The energy produced by the sun is, in part, used to ensure the startup of the wind turbine and, in part, is added to that produced by the wind to be thus made available to the utility.

WIND SOLAR
SEA TOWER

Floating platform

An octagonal floating platform in tubular steel.
Possibility of use regardless of the sea depth and seabed conditions.
Stabilization of the system through cables suitably anchored to ballasts simply resting on the
seabed.
Reduced environmental impact compared to systems constrained directly to the seabed, as it
does not require pillar foundations and does not damage the seabed.

How the system works

Floating platform saturated with the installation of polycrystalline silicon PV modules
Darrieus-type Vertical Axis Wind Turbine with a two-bladed rotor located in the center of the
platform.
Offshore power generation system capable of harnessing energy from the sun and wind.

Advantages that a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Offers

Low center of gravity: optimal weight balance due to the sea-level location of the generator and
gearbox, which allows the construction of a simple and small platform.
Simple design and construction: absence of yaw mechanisms (ability to accept wind from
whatever direction it comes from).
Low maintenance costs: fewer mechanical components in motion and nacelle placed at sea level.
